Crossing Lines

Three cheers for the _________________,____________________and blue. By a 68 to 31 vote of the Senate, we welcome Justice Sotomayor onto the Supreme Court. Apart from the 'affirmative actions' of 9 'Red dog Republicans', the remaining Republican Senators were all party line naysayers.

Pandering to the angry white and the special interest groups continues to be the Republican way of doing business. Last week, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky spoke of his opposition to the Sotomayor nomination. He stated that " a judge must be able to check his or her personal or political agenda at the courtroom door and do justice evenhandedly". I wonder why this statement has no application in his arena.

The reality is that 31 Republican Senators rejected the nominee because they could not leave their personal or political agenda outside the door of the Senate chambers. They could not see beyond the second Amendment advocates and the other special interest lobbyists who stood in front of them as they voted. They could not overcome the fact that they would be reporting to their constituents that they indeed favored a 'wise Latina woman' for all the right reasons.

We are watching as our health care reform debate is colored by a failure of some to speak honestly and openly for fear of reprisal. The Democrats are bogged down trying to counter misrepresentations and half truths as Republican politicians do what they do best.

There was no legitimate rationale for the Republican base to reject Justice Sotomayor. They fumbled and grasped at straws. They created issues where none existed. They chose to take the path of least resistance. They did not vote based on the qualifications of the nominee and in so doing, they did not do justice for the country. We will never be red, white and blue until the rhetoric and the partisanship is driven into hiding.

Indeed, it's too early to call, as a loud ring might wake some people up. Partisanship will never, and should never, be driven into hiding. Partisanship and debate, no matter how ugly, is what keeps freedom and democracy alive in America. Look around the globe at the other alternatives.
It is interesting to note how the Democrats are growing ever more desperate as the party begins to splinter into it's more liberal and conservative wings after they destroyed the Republicans in November. The desperation is growing stronger as seen in their response to the town-hall meetings, comments by president Pelosi accusing people at these meetings of "carrying swastikas and symbols like that." How about the new White House email address to which citizens are told to report anti-health-care messages?(talk about nazism). It's nothing less than the Democrats creating an enemies list. Maybe Obama will have the IRS take a closer look at these anti-Americans.
Let's recall this nation was established out of the same town-hall rebellion we're witnessing over the lies and misrepresentations related to Obamacare.
The Obama regime is beginning to unravel, as the president has demonstrated his lack of leadership allowing a disfunctional Congress to take charge of failing initiatives. The leftwing liberals are frantic, panicky and behaving like juveniles who are not getting their way and blaming an inert Republican party when the real opposition is from within.
As for Justice Sotomayor, she may well turn out to be a very good Supreme, but if she truly was a "wise Latina woman" she would have thought twice about making that comment in the first place. Can you imagine a white person of either gender making a similar remark?
I think too many Americans have been L'Obamatized. "That is the highly scientific condition of having half your brain removed and the other half turned into jelly with no off/on switch to control veneration of the 44th president."

WE CERTAINLY DO HAVE A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION SET FORTH FOR ALL THOSE WHO HAPPEN TO BE READING THIS BLOG.

I WOULD ASK THAT PEOPLE WEIGH IN WITH THEIR VIEW.

I WROTE LAST YEAR OF THE GREAT DIVIDE. MY POST, AND THIS RESPONSE, SHOULD BE EXHIBIT A AND B.

It took a little time but I found your "Great Divide" (Sept. 14, 2008, for anyone else interested in reading it). I must take exception to your characterization. I have no difficulty carrying on "conversations with those who do not share my befiefs." I also enjoy listening to any talking head on any network regardless of the view they happen to espouse at the moment. After all, even the great Obama has reversed himself on so many things he espoused during the campaign.

It is not meant as a personal attack. I just don't believe there is a substantive debate going on between the parties relating to the issues. If you think there is a forthright effort on the part of the Republicans to address the heart of the problems by way of frank discussion, I respectfully disagree.I see anything but that occurring.

I agree, and, of course, no offense taken, but you now make my case: the Republicans are an inert bunch of meat heads with no agenda, no leadership, and no direction. The real debate, and opposition, is within the Democratic party itself. "It's Dems against Dems." Did you read Frank Rich in today's NY Times? He sums it up very succinctly, I think.
